Who Am I?
My head knocks against the stars.
My feet are on the hilltops.
My finger-tips are in the valleys and shores of
universal life.
Down in the sounding foam of primal things I
reach my hands and play with pebbles of
destiny.
I have been to hell and back many times.
I know all about heaven, for I have talked with God.
I dabble in the blood and guts of the terrible.
I know the passionate seizure of beauty
And the marvelous rebellion of man at all signs
reading "Keep Off."
My name is Truth and I am the most elusive captive
in the universe.

Carl Sandburg nasceu pobre, em Gallesburg, Illinois, no ano de 1878, e fez-se poeta famoso, folclorista e historiador respeitado, dentre outras inúmeras profissões exercidas durante a sua rica e prolífica vida.
Em 1898 participou na guerra Hispano-americana, como soldado e jornalista. Depois ingressou no Lombard College, onde se distinguiu como orador e um dos editores do jornal escolar. Lá, foi incentivado a escrever pelo professor Philip Green Wright, que, dois anos depois de Carl deixar o colégio para trabalhar como jornalista, pagaria a publicação de seu primeiro livro, Reckless Ecstasy (1904).
Em 1916, Sandburg publica o livro Chicago Poems e com ele firma seu nome como um grande escritor, estabelecendo um estilo e dicção próprias, refletindo industrialismo na América e abandonando os velhos estratagemas literários.
Ganhou ainda o prêmio Pulitzer em 1940, com a biografia de Abraham Lincoln, em seis volumes, e em 1951 com o volume Complete Poems.
